The challenge
Southern Downs Regional Council required a comprehensive condition assessment and video capture of its road network to provide current, reliable information about the condition of its road assets.
The project requires the systematic collection of georeferenced imagery and road-condition information across Council’s network. The captured information must be accurate, consistent and capable of being integrated into Council’s existing asset-management and geographic information systems.
The assessment will help Council better understand the condition of its roads and provide an evidence base for future maintenance, renewal and investment decisions.
Our solution
Proterra Group is using Survai technology to undertake a safe and efficient assessment of the road network. Mobile Survai combines vehicle-mounted cameras, LiDAR data, positioning equipment and road-assessment sensors to capture synchronised imagery and condition information while travelling at normal road-survey speeds.
Georeferenced imagery is generally captured every 10 metres, creating a detailed visual record of the network. The system can also collect road roughness, crossfall and rut-depth information to support a more complete understanding of pavement and surface condition.
- confirming road-network coverage and required deliverables with Council;
- planning safe and systematic field-capture routes;
- collecting georeferenced road imagery and sensor data;
- collecting LiDAR Data across the road and table drains
- monitoring image quality and data completeness during capture;
- processing and reviewing the collected information;
- undertaking geographic information system processing;
- assessing road condition and recording observed defects; and
- supplying the completed information in Council’s required reporting, tabular and spatial formats.
The fieldwork and data processing are being completed by Proterra Group GIS Officer David Mitchell, under the direction of Major Projects Manager David Bell.
The benefit
The project will provide Southern Downs Regional Council with consistent, georeferenced evidence of road condition across its network.
By combining high-resolution imagery, spatial information and road-condition data, Council will be able to review assets remotely, identify and record defects, and use current information to support maintenance and renewal planning.
The Survai platform also allows the captured data to be supplied in Council’s required formats, reducing dependence on a proprietary system and supporting integration with existing asset-management and geographic information systems.
The result
Works are currently underway, with Proterra Group having completed the initial project milestones.
The project is progressing through systematic field capture, quality checking and spatial data processing. On completion, Southern Downs Regional Council will receive an updated and detailed record of its road network to support asset-condition reporting, works programming and evidence-based infrastructure investment decisions.
